After being close to missing the cut and thus the last two rounds of the competition, Norén played at Detroit Golf Club.

Saturday was good, Sunday very good - his 64 strokes were the best of all during the day and suddenly Alex Norén's name shone at the very top of the scoreboard.

In the even competition, it was then to wait nervously in the clubhouse when player after player came up with the same result, 17 under par - at most the five players were on the result.

"Working me back"

Norén's nine birdies for the day were not enough when the opponents lowered a bunker shot for eagle (Cameron Davis) or did not make a single bogey on the 72 holes (Joaquin Niemann) and the Swede could only watch when a possible victory became a fourth place.

Had only the 2.5-meter putt for birdie gone in on the 18th, Norén would also have had to go further holes for the victory.

- I knew that I probably had to put it on to force special games, but at the same time I have not been close or in the lead for a very long time.

If you are regularly involved in these situations, it feels different.

But I work my way back towards it and the next time I get a similar situation, I will hopefully do better, says Norén according to Kvällsposten.

Australian victory

Instead, Davis and Niemann had to go into a special game with Troy Merritt.

There, the players continued to go evenly and only on the fifth hole could Australian Cam Davis take his first PGA Tour victory.

Thus, there was no early birthday present for Alex Norén, 39 years in a week.

But fourth place is his best result in North America since third place in Minnesota at the end of July last year and can give increased confidence before the British Open and the Olympic competitions in Tokyo later in July.

Men's golf, where Henrik Norlander (38th in Detroit) is also a Swedish participant, points to Kasumigaseki Country Club on 29 July.
