• French supporters dispute the validity of the penalty arrested Monday by Yann Sommer, the Swiss goalkeeper, against Kylian Mbappé during the elimination of France by Switzerland in the round of 16 of Euro 2021.

  • A new rule, in effect since 2019, states that the goalkeeper must have at least one foot on the line when the ball is shot.

  • A replay shows that this was the case, contrary to what viral publications on social networks suggest.

It is the controversy that feeds the hope, for some, of seeing France-Switzerland again: Yann Sommer, the Swiss goalkeeper, was he well positioned on the line at the time of Kylian MBappé's penalty in the round of 16 of the Euro 2021?

The debate agitates social networks,

where a screenshot is circulating virally.

It shows the left foot of the Swiss goalkeeper which appears to be above the goal line, as the French striker prepares to shoot.

Supporters thus intend to show that the goal was not correctly positioned - the foot on the line -, which would cancel the validity of its stop which cost the qualification to the Blues on Monday.

FAKE OFF

Yann Sommer was following a new rule that since 2019 requires goalkeepers to keep only one foot on the goal line when taking the shot.

They had to keep both feet before.

This foot can be in direct contact with the line, but also simply be above it, according to the International Football Association Board, the body which sets the rules of the game. goal must have at least one foot on its line (or at the same level if the foot does not touch the ground) ”, explains the IFAB.

In the English version of the rule, the authority specifies that the goalkeeper is not obliged to have all the foot touching the line, one part is enough.

On the screenshot circulating on social networks, Kylian Mbappé has not yet hit the ball.

This rule of the foot on the line applies when firing.

"The ball is in play when it has been kicked and has clearly moved", details the IFAB, which is not the case on the viral screenshot.

At two hours, forty minutes and thirty-eight seconds on this replay, we can clearly see that the Swiss goalkeeper had his left heel on the goal line just after Kylian Mbappé's strike.

The Argentine referee of the match, Fernando Rapallini, took a few seconds before validating the save, surely time to make checks with the VAR.

What to leave little hope for the supporters of the Blues.
