29-year-old Halep was the reigning champion at Wimbledon through the title in 2019, last year the tournament was canceled due to the pandemic.

She also abstained from the last Olympics, the one in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, due to concerns about the Zika virus.

"After the disappointment of missing both the French Open and Wimbledon, it is extremely difficult to digest that I also miss the Olympics, but I am convinced that I can come back stronger than before," writes Halep, who suffered a ruptured calf in the second round in Rome.
