The German table tennis idol Timo Boll (Düsseldorf) won the individual title at the European Championships in Warsaw for the eighth time.

In the final, the world number 11 defeated his national team colleague Dimitrij Ovtcharov, who was two places higher, 4: 1 (9:11, 11: 6, 11: 9, 11: 8, 11: 8) and thus celebrated his 20th gold in continental championships .

The 40-year-old, who defeated World Cup second and world ranking eighth Mattias Falck (Sweden) 4-2 in the semifinals, further increased the age record he set for European championships three years ago.

The eight years younger Ovtcharov, however, missed his third European title after 2013 and 2015.

Before Boll's success, Europe Top 16 winner Petrissa Solja (Langstadt) had won gold in singles for the first time.

Thanks to their 4: 1 success in a German final against Shan Xiaona from Berlin, the two most important titles on the continent are now owned by two players from the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB).

Solja and Shan had previously also won the doubles title. Together with the mixed title for Dang Qiu / Nina Mittelham (Grünwettersbach / Berlin), the DTTB recorded four titles in Poland's capital and thus the best European Championship record in its history.
