The last 21 men's singles finals at the European Championships have been Swedish-free.

And before that - in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s - Sweden won gold in eight of eleven European Championships.

And it also happened that Sweden took two and sometimes all three medals at the European Championships.

But now it can turn around - and the forgotten folk sport will return.

A talented and competitive generation has emerged, and four out of five in the national team captain Jörgen Persson's - former world and European champions - EC-selected squad are in the top 50 in the world rankings.

A breadth that has not existed since the blue-yellow ping pong empire disappeared.

"Everyone can win a medal"

And the troupe has the conditions to serve Sweden closer to the dominated ping-pong nation it once was.

- Europe is very open now, it's hard to guess.

Germany with Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov is the strongest, after that it is very open and even.

All five I have, can with a good day and tournament, can take a medal, says national team captain Jörgen Persson.

In the men's singles, Mattias Falck, who took sensational World Cup silver 2019, is top-seeded, ahead of the Germans Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Timo Boll.

And in doubles, Falck plays together with Kristian Karlsson - the duo has won two European Championship silvers and two bronze medals at the last five European Championships.

In addition to them, Jon Persson, Anton Källberg and Truls Möregårdh have been selected, and medal candidates according to Jörgen Persson.

The European Championships in Warsaw take place between 22 and 27 June.
