Mo Farah is without a doubt one of the greatest athletics stars of the 21st century.

After the breakthrough in 2006, when he took silver in the 5000 meters at the European Championships in Gothenburg, there have been six World Cup golds, four Olympic golds and nine European Championship golds.

Aiming for the Olympics

In recent years, however, he has invested in marathons and half marathons, and won the Chicago Marathon 2018, for example.

But now he is back in the big athletics arenas.

His goal is to qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo, to take a third Olympic gold in a row in 10,000 meters - and a fifth Olympic gold in total.

- Marathon is tough, very tough.

I have been successful enough to do good marathon results.

My first marathon I ran on 2.08 and have since improved.

I broke the British record, 2.05 which was a European record then, and did well, he says when SVT Sport meets him in Djibouti, and continues:

- I have thought it was fun with marathons, because it is something completely different to train for marathons and track running.

42 kilometers is a big difference compared to 10 kilometers, you have to train much more specifically for marathons, and I have enjoyed it.

- But I miss track running, and since it is an Olympics this summer, I will return to the arenas.

Was it an obvious choice for you to invest in 10,000 meters before this year?

- I have missed 10,000 meters.

It's about what makes you happy.

I have achieved a lot, and have run okay marathons.

But I miss laughing.

I miss having that smile when you run around, around and see different runners.

- So that was one of the reasons.

And the second is that it would be unbelievable to be able to write history.

No one has ever done it before, to take five Olympic golds.

That would be historic, I guess.

But what drives me is that I do not really know if I can do it - but if I do, then it would really be worth it.

22 seconds from the qualifying limit

But it is not certain that Mo Farah will get the chance to take a new Olympic gold.

When he did his first 10,000-meter race since 2017 earlier this month, he was a full 22 seconds from the qualifying limit.

And his longtime Swedish friend Mustafa Mohamed, who as recently as last spring was at training camp with Mo Farah in Ethiopia, believes that it will be difficult for Mo Farah to take a new Olympic gold.

- It's sick big if he succeeds with them.

But I think it will be very big.

These runners now ... It's almost a new generation that did not compete against him when he was at his best on the track.

They do not have the same respect, but believe that he is the factory that was good many years ago, says Muhamed with a laugh, and continues:

- The question is whether he has this speed and sprint ability left.

I do not think he himself knows.

Can be the last race

And if Mo Farah goes to the Olympics, then the question is what happens next?

For SVT Sport, Mo Farah says that it may be his last race.

- I see nothing in front of me after the Olympics.

Honestly, I just want to concentrate on the Olympics.

After the Olympics, we make a decision about what I should do.

Should I continue with the track running, or go back to the marathon, or something completely different Or maybe I will become a coach?

Who knows?
