American shot putter Ryan Crouser broke the 31-year-old world record shot put on Friday.
The reigning Olympic champion came in his fourth attempt at 23.37 meters during a game at Hayward Field in Eugene, USA.
He thus improved the world record of his compatriot Randy Barnes.
That came in 1990 to a distance of 23.12 meters.
The 28-year-old Crouser had already taken the indoor world record from Barnes in January by reaching 22.82 meters during a competition in the American state of Arkansas.
Crouser must defend his Olympic title at the Tokyo Games this summer.
There he is considered the top favorite in the section.
