The club's new general manager Chris Drury says in a statement on Rangers' website that Gallant is a perfect choice to lead Mika Zibanejad & Co.

"Gerard's merits have made him one of the league's most sought after coaches and we are fortunate to have him on our team.

I have no doubt that he will play a crucial role in helping us take the next step towards building a team that can win titles, ”he says.

Gallant has previously been head coach for Columbus, Florida and most recently Vegas.

The latter team led the 2017/2018 season to the Stanley Cup final against Washington.

As an active player, he played eleven seasons in the NHL - in Detroit and Tampa Bay.

The Rangers missed the Stanley Cup playoffs this year and in May, both former coach David Quinn and the NHL team chairman and general manager were fired.
