Led by its top stars Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, Wales ruined Turkey's “home game” in Baku and kept their fans dreaming of the round of 16 at the European Football Championship.

Coach Robert Page's team defeated the Turks, supported by around 30,000 enthusiastic supporters, on Wednesday deservedly 2-0 (1-0).

In front of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev and UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin, Ramsey scored the first goal in the 42nd minute after strong work from Bale.

Connor Roberts (90th + 5) put the finishing touches.

He met after work by Bale, who had dribbled along the goal line after a brief corner kick.

Bale missed the early decision with a missed foul penalty (61.), but with combined forces, the "dragons" brought the lead over time.

With a win and a draw against Switzerland in the first game, Wales are fully on target in Group A.

Turkey is on the other hand with zero points after two games before the end.

The Turks, the hosts, reacted to the largely harmless performance against Italy (0: 3).

Coach Senöl Günes brought in the former Schalke and Düsseldorf Kaan Ayhan in central defense and initially put the own goal scorer Merih Demiral on the bench.

Cengiz Ünder should give the offensive more penetrative power instead of Yusuf Yazici.

With the Welsh team, Bale led the same formation as last on the grass, on which the players of both teams and referee Artur Dias from Portugal knelt before the start of the game as a protest against racism.

With their well-rehearsed team, the Welsh had their first chance to score.

After preliminary work by Bale, Ramsey (6th) failed against the Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir.

In front of the atmospheric backdrop, both teams got off to a lively start.

Despite the shouts of “Türkiye, Türkiye” from the stands, Wales got off to a better start.

After another excellent pass from Bale, Ramsey again chased the ball free standing but far over the goal.

The Turks were not only supported verbally but also visually in the stadium.

Turkish and Azerbaijani flags were distributed in front of the arena, thousands of them waved during the game.

The two nations feel closely linked and refer to themselves as "brothers".

A couple of giant flags of Turkey were also spread out.

The euphoria from the ranks, however, was only carried over sporadically.

Wales' midfielder Joe Morrell cleared twice in front of the goal line against Ayhan (30th) and Caglar Söyüncü (31st).

But in the middle of a phase of Turkish dominance, Wales struck: For the third time, Tottenham professional Bale served his offensive partner Ramsey, who this time playfully overcame Cakir and gave the 2016 European Championship semi-finalist a 1-0 break lead.

With two changes - Demiral for Okay and Yazici for Ozan Tufan - the Turks tried to turn the tide after the break.

But only captain Burak Yilmaz (54th) had a promising opportunity, but clearly missed the goal.

Then, of all people, Bale caused disbelief and petrified faces among the Welsh fans in the stands: After the 31-year-old was fouled in the penalty area, he took the penalty himself - and shot meters over the goal. Shortly afterwards, Cakir shot at the Welshman, from which the ball spun past the Turkish goal by just a few centimeters. The most conspicuous player in the game had another chance in the 80th minute. The Welsh effortlessly withstood the subsequent pressure from the Turks in the hectic final phase with scuffles between the players.
