During the France-Germany match on Tuesday evening, German defender Antonio Rüdiger seemed to have tried to bite French midfielder Paul Pogba, without being relieved by the referee of the match.

A gesture which could be worth a sanction on the part of the disciplinary committee of the UEFA.

France's victory against Germany (1-0) on Tuesday night on the first day of Euro 2020 was marked by the attempted bite of German defender Antonio Rüdiger in the back of Frenchman Paul Pogba, just before half-time. It happens in a fraction of a second. Rüdiger and Pogba are then in the fight on a throw-in. While the German defender is glued behind him, the tricolor midfielder screams, but the referee does not whistle for a fault. Paul Pogba may complain to the assistant referee, nothing helps, and the VAR does not intervene. However, it is not over yet: if it looks into this action, the UEFA Disciplinary Committee could sanction Antonio Rüdiger.

Rüdiger's bite on Pogba

"It was a fight, Germany wanted to avoid a defeat so they fought, sometimes on the edge of what to do. I didn't like Antonio Rüdiger's action, it didn't was not a beautiful image ", commented after the meeting on Europe 1 Gernot Rohr, the Franco-German coach of Nigeria, who also considered" deserved "the victory of the Blues.

At the 2014 World Cup, the Uruguayan Luis Suarez had clearly bitten an opponent, the Italian Giorgio Chiellini, before being suspended for nine matches and four months from any football-related activity by FIFA. If it takes up the case, the UEFA disciplinary committee could therefore also crack down. Antonio Rüdiger's action seems less aggressive than Luis Suarez's, but he warned before France-Germany: "We will have to be ready to respond and win our duels. It will just be dirty, not always nice, and not You can't get by with good football. Against players like the French, you have to know how to send messages. I've always played like that, with warrior things ". Paul Pogba did not dwell on this gesture, as evidenced byhug between the two players at the end of the meeting.

Other contested actions

This is not the only questionable action of this meeting.

Others could have been sanctioned by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande, such as this impressive charge from Robin Gosens on Benjamin Pavard on the hour mark, which pinned the French defender to the ground for a few minutes.

Or this penalty after a very limited tackle from Mats Hummels on Kylian Mbappé at the end of the game.

All these game facts have not been reviewed by video refereeing assistance.

The Blues have in any case managed to overcome the physical challenge to win against the Mannschaft.
