An Austrian player investigated for racism during a goal celebration

The European Football Association (UEFA) has launched an investigation into the celebration of Austria striker Marko Arnautovic's goal during the European Football Championship, after accusations that he racially insulted the player from North Macedonia.

The European Union (UEFA) said in a statement: "An ethics and discipline inspector has been appointed to conduct an investigation into the incident of player Marko Arnautovic, which occurred during the match between Austria and North Macedonia at the European Nations on June 13."

For its part, the North Macedonia Football Association, through a statement on the social networking site "Facebook", said that it had sent an official letter to UEFA demanding the most severe penalty for Arnautovic, who scored the third goal for Austria in the match that ended 3/1 for his team last Sunday.

"We are against discrimination and all other forms of insults that are not part of the football we all defend," he added.

A phrase was reportedly used to symbolize the Kosovo war, while Arnautovic (his father, a Serbian) targeted Albanian player Izjan Alewski, while Austrian captain David Alaba was quick to calm his teammate.

Earlier in the day, Arnautovic denied the allegations of racism, telling reporters at the Austria national team camp in Seefeld: "I have never been a racist and never will be."

He added, "It was hot words exchanged between two parties, I have friends from all over the world." Nevertheless, the Austrian admitted that his behavior was not good and apologized for that by saying: "I'm sorry."
