The Netherlands, who have not played a championship since the 2014 World Cup, hosted Ukraine at home at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam.

And before the match clock showed ten match minutes, they had created several chances.

The closest was captain Georginio Wijnaldum, whose finish went just over the bar.

After just over a quarter of an hour, matches calmed down after the intense start.

The Netherlands had large parts of the ball possession while Ukraine focused on being right in the defensive game and then countered.

In the 39th minute of the match, the Netherlands got their best chance when Wijnaldum pulled on the volley but Buschan in the Ukrainian goal provided a super save.

Goal-rich second half

In the end, the Netherlands would receive a dividend.

In the 52nd minute of the match, Buschan released a return straight out - which then Wijnaldum stepped forward and pushed into the net.

Just over five minutes later also came 2-0.

After a short tussle with the defender, Weghorst finally tucked the ball home.

But Ukraine would come back.

With 75 minutes played, Andriy Yarmolenko of FC fell dramatically just outside the penalty area.

With the ball at his left foot, he screwed the ball into the far cross - unreachable for Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

And just four minutes after that, the receipt came.

Roman Yaremchuk reached the top of a free kick and nodded nicely in 2-2.

Decided in the end

However, that would not be the last goal of the match.

With 85 minutes played, the home side managed to get a 1 - 0 lead as Denzel Dumfries flipped the ball in after a cross from the right.

The goal meant 3-2 to the Netherlands, who could then persevere and secure three important points.
