The postponement of Euro 2020 football due to the coronavirus outbreak has also forced sponsors and advertising campaigns to wait another year.

But the sponsors remained, and now, the players in the sector are counting on heavy consumer spending, especially for derivatives.

DECRYPTION

It's the big day for football fans.

The Euro, initially scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, opens Friday in Rome with the Turkey-Italy match.

While everything was close a year ago, the health crisis had therefore resulted in the postponement of the competition, but also of all the extras such as sponsors or advertising campaigns.

For what economic impact?

The sponsors did not leave the ship

The uncertainty related to the health situation has delayed many investments.

Campaigns usually stalled long months in advance have only been decided in recent weeks, but all the sponsors have remained.

And as always, the economic impact will be measured through consumer spending.

Also, the bars hope to attract as many people as possible.

And of course there are the derivative products.

According to an ING study, one in five French people plan to spend an average of 99 euros on jerseys, caps or decoration.

The Blues jerseys should sell well

At the microphone of Europe 1, Virgile Caillet, general delegate of Union Sport et Cycle, which represents shops and brands in the sector, anticipates a real craze for the jersey of the world champions.

"I remind you that in 2018, there was this frustration with a lot of supporters who had not found this famous two-star jersey at the time," he explains.

And traders can count on "a few strong personalities on jerseys that sell well: Mbappé, Griezmann but also Benzema".

In the end, he adds: "We think that this year, it will be even stronger than usual".
