FIFA reaches a settlement in the issue of broadcasting the World Cup through “cruise ships”

FIFA announced today that its dispute with German cruise company TUI Cruises over the broadcasting of World Cup matches on cruise ships is due to be resolved in a settlement in a Hamburg court.

FIFA filed a lawsuit against the German company after it broadcast the World Cup matches for men in 2018 and for women the following year for free on its ships through the German stations (ARD) and (ZDF), which have the rights to broadcast matches in Germany.

FIFA clarified that TUI Cruises does not have a license for such broadcasts based on the FIFA Basic Feed in international waters.

The federation statement indicated that the Hamburg District Court had stated two months ago that the German company should have respected the rights of FIFA.

FIFA added that under the settlement, the company will recognize FIFA's broadcasting rights to the core feed and will refrain from using it in its on-board systems, even via rights holders (the two ARD and ZDF stations) unless it obtains a license.
