The historic first Nations League edition in North and Central America ended last night, with a powerful dramatic finale.

Mexico got off to a dream start when Jesus Corona gave the team the lead.

Double VAR penalties

But the United States came back, and then equalized again after Weston McKennie equalized three minutes after Diego Lainez's 2-1 goal in the 79th minute.

The match then went into extra time, where the United States received a penalty after VAR review, early in the second overtime quarter, after Carlos Salcedo pulled down the American superstar Christian Pulisic.

Punishment after hand

Pulisic took care of the penalty himself - and put 3-2.

He really celebrated, which was not appreciated by the Mexican audience - and an American player was hit in the head by a thrown object.

When the match clock had reached 120 minutes, Mexico also received a penalty - after a Mexican hand in the penalty area.

But Andrés Guardado's penalty was saved by goalkeeper Ethan Horvath - who in the second half was substituted after first goalkeeper Zack Steffen was injured.

"Always be ready"

3-2 the match stood out, and incoming Horvath thus became a big match winner.

- As a second goalkeeper, you always have to be ready, Horvath said afterwards in the TV interview, who grew up in Denver where the final was played.

- This is a special moment.

To be in my hometown ... I'm speechless.

- I'm proud of the guys.

We got off to a tough start but came back!
