Pontus Holmberg was a great success in Växjö 2020/21.

He was one of the big foreground figures when the team won the Swedish Championship gold.

The 22-year-old was also named the entire playoff MVP.

The breakthrough led to Holmberg being selected for the Swedish World Cup squad, where Tre Kronor was responsible for a historic belly splash.

On Friday, the NHL club Toronto Maple Leafs confirmed on their website that they have signed a two-year contract with Holmberg.

The 22-year-old will, however, continue to represent Växjö Lakers next season in the SHL.

Toronto drafted the Swede in the sixth round in 2018.
