Jacqueline Otchere from Mannheim won the pole vault title at the German athletics championships in Braunschweig.

With 4.30 meters, the 24-year-old relegated Leni Freyja Wildgrube from SC Potsdam, who jumped 4.20 meters, to second place on Friday.

Wildgrube's club colleague Ella Buchner was third with the same amount.

World Cup participant Katharina Bauer, who jumps with a defibrillator because of a heart disease, mastered the 4.20 in the second attempt and was fourth.

For Otchere it is the second national title win after 2018. However, the norm for participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo is 4.70 meters.

The former European Championship runner-up and four-time German champion Lisa Ryzih from Ludwigshafen did not start.

The women's pole vault was the only medal competition on Friday.

The other 33 other titles will be awarded on Saturday and Sunday.

For the Tokyo Games, the German champions will be nominated with priority if they have also exceeded the Olympic standard.
