The Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos) preserved his pink jersey as leader of the Giro d'Italia cycling in the 20th and penultimate stage won by his runner-up, the Italian Damiano Caruso, on Saturday in Alpe di Motta.

Bernal, second on the stage, gave up 24 seconds in Caruso on the eve of the 30-kilometer time trial, this Sunday in Milan.

A final time trial, which starts from Senago in the north of Milan and which includes long straight lines to end in front of the Duomo of the great Lombard city.

In the general classification, the Colombian precedes the Italian by 1 min 59 sec.

Briton Simon Yates remains third, at 3 min 23 sec.

Above the resort of Madesimo, Caruso at the age of 33 captured his greatest success, the third in a career started in 2009, after setting the last day on the mountain ablaze.

Colombian Daniel Martinez, Bernal's lieutenant, took third place, 35 seconds ahead of Frenchman Romain Bardet and Portuguese Joao Almeida.

Caruso and Bardet alone 6.5 kilometers from the summit

Bardet then Caruso took the lead in the descent of the passo San Bernardino, some 55 kilometers from the finish.

With the help of teammates (Hamilton and Storer for Bardet, Bilbao for Caruso), they maintained a lead of around 40 seconds in the second of the three climbs of the day, the Spluga, and approached the final climb with this advantage. .Caruso and Bardet found themselves alone 6.5 kilometers from the summit before the Sicilian took down his companion in the 2 kilometers, in front of the crowd of supporters, and went off to claim the sixth victory for Italy since the start.
