The organization of the Giro d'Italia made a course change for Friday's stage in consultation with the authorities on Tuesday.

The riders are not going over the Mottarone because of the drama that took place there on Sunday with the crash of a cab of a cable car.

In the disaster, which took place between Stresa and Mottarone on Lake Maggiore near the Italian border with Switzerland, a cable is said to have snapped.

Thirteen people were killed instantly, a little later a child was the fourteenth victim.

The Mottarone would be the first climb of the nineteenth Giro stage.

The mountain is replaced by the Gignese, which is of the fourth category and therefore less heavy.

The ride will be slightly shorter in total and will go from 176 to 166 kilometers.

It is not the first time this Giro that the course has been changed.

On Monday, the organization decided to cancel two mountain passes in the queen stage, which was won by rosette jersey wearer Egan Bernal, due to emergency weather.

At the start of the last Giro week, Bernal is the big favorite for the overall victory.

The Colombian of INEOS Grenadiers makes a strong impression and has a 2.24 minute lead in the standings over Damiano Caruso of Bahrain-Victorous.

With a gap of 3.40, Hugh Carty (EF Education-Nippo) is the number three.

The Dutch do not play a significant role in the absolute top this year;

Jumbo-Visma rider Koen Bouwman is our best fellow countryman in sixteenth place (+23.50).
