Alex Norén has been 25th and 21st in his last two starts on the PGA Tour.

Good and stable efforts, but it has been a long time since the Swede got a real hit.

Now the 38-year-old, who next week will play major golf in the PGA Championship on Kiawah Island, has given himself a nice starting position for a top position this week.

Norén went seven under par in the first round, after nine birdies and two bogeys.

It was easy to play conditions and many players managed to get low scores.

Norén, who is two strokes from the lead, shares with his result seventh place with eleven players.

A total of 132 of the 155 players in the competition went around under par.

Good golf was also played by Jonas Blixt in his third PGA Tour competition after returning from long-term back problems.

Blixt made two eagles and was -6 already after twelve holes, but later hit the water on the 14th, before he finished with a birdie for 66 strokes.

It gave him a shared 19th place.

American hidden ice JJ Spaun took an early lead of 63 strokes, a result only more experienced Jordan Spieth could match.

However, Spieth needed an eagle on the 18th hole to get up in the split lead.

The two are one stroke ahead of a quartet of players.
