The change means that the midfielder, everyday in Manchester City, can be selected for the Spanish European Championship squad.
The well-qualified 26-year-old grew up in France but moved to Spain in 2010 to join Athletic Bilbao's youth academy.
Three seasons ago, he was bought to Manchester City for the equivalent of SEK 670 million.
He has made over 50 matches for various French youth national teams but has - despite his merits - never made an A international for France.
Sweden will face Spain already in the European Championship premiere in Seville on 14 June.
