Sweden will apply for the European Handball Championship for both ladies and men together with Denmark and Norway.

The Scandinavian countries want the championships 2026 or 2028.

"All three countries aim to be world-class in terms of both handball and organizers and have the potential to create fantastic handball parties," says Stefan Lövgren, CEO of Svenska handbollslandslaget AB and responsible for the candidacy, to the national team's website.

Sweden has hosted the European Championships eight times, most recently in 2020 for men and 2016 for women.

Sweden will also have the World Cup for men in 2023 together with Poland and the same year have the World Cup for women with Denmark and Norway.

Decision in November

“Swedish handball has a clear strategy to seek hosting for the international championships and create handball parties at home.

As the championships grow both in terms of participation and organization, at the same time as we want to continue to be at the forefront of sustainability issues in handball, it is almost required that two or more countries go together and apply for the championships together, ”says Lövgren.

In the proposal for the men's EC, which will be decided in January, Malmö and Kristianstad would be Sweden's venues in group games and in the intermediate round, with Herning and Copenhagen hosting the final game.

As for the ladies' European Championships, which take place in December, Gothenburg and Helsingborg are proposed as hosts in the group stage.

The final game was to take place in Oslo.

In November, the European Handball Federation will decide on European hosts 2026 and 2028.
