Sergio Agüero has apologized for his silly penalty in Saturday's championship game against Chelsea.

The Manchester City striker missed with a panenka and his team eventually lost 1-2.

Agüero could have brought the score to 2-0 with his penalty, but Chelsea keeper Édouard Mendy remained standing and easily saved.

With a win, City would have won the championship.

Now Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso still gave Chelsea the victory.

"I'm sorry to my teammates, staff and supporters for missing the penalty. I made a bad choice, for which I am solely responsible," Agüero writes on Twitter.

City manager Josep Guardiola did not blame Agüero for his miss.

"Now that he's missed, he's selfish. If that ball had gone in, people would say how genius he is. That's how it works," said the Spaniard.

"I always tell the players to make a choice beforehand: a panenka, left, right, a short run ... Do whatever you want, but make a choice. He did. Unfortunately he missed."

City will have another chance to win the championship on Friday.

The Guardiola's team will then visit number fourteen Newcastle United.
