Rome announces the departure of its coach Fonseca

The Italian football club Roma announced today, Tuesday, the departure of its Portuguese coach, Paulo Fonseca, from the team after the end of the current season.

Fonseca, 48, took over as coach of the team in 2019 from Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukraine, on a two-year contract with an option to extend for another year until 2022.

Roma suffered bad results in the recent period, losing 2/6 to Manchester United in the semi-final first leg of the European Football League last week, and the team ranks seventh in the Italian League, after it missed victories in four consecutive matches, with the remainder Four matches to the end of the season.

"Paulo led the team in several challenges, including the Coronavirus crisis and the change of ownership of the club," said Dan Friedkin, president of Roma club. "He did so with a wonderful personality and with great humility."

For his part, Fonseca said: "In the past two years we have had many successes and failures, but I have always done my best for the club and the city that has not always been welcoming."

Fonseca won the league and cup double in Ukraine during his three seasons as coach with Shakhtar, and he had previously coached Sporting Braga and Portugal's Porto.
