Demi Vollering won Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday.

The Team SD Worx rider benefited from good preparatory work by her teammate Anna van der Breggen and was the strongest of a leading group of five in the final meters of 'La Doyenne'.

In the final of the race over 141 kilometers with seven climbs, Van der Breggen rode hard ahead of Vollering, who recently finished second in the Brabantse Pijl and the Amstel Gold Race and achieved her first major victory.

After a number of failed flight attempts, nervousness increased with about 35 kilometers to go in the peloton.

Three riders, including Lucinda Brand, broke away from the peloton and behind them Van der Breggen, Vollering, Annemiek van Vleuten and Marianne Vos, among others, showed themselves from the front.

Brand and her fellow escapees did not hold their own, after which the race on the last climb - the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons of 1.3 kilometers at 11 percent - really ignited.

Vos became the main victim: the lead woman of Jumbo-Visma could not follow the favorites, later joined again, but eventually had to pass.

Van der Breggen was the one who kept the pace at the front, with teammate Vollering, Van Vleuten, Elisa Longo Borghini and Katarzyna Niewiadoma on her wheel.

Her work turned out not for nothing;

Vollering finished.

Later on Sunday, the men finish in Liège.

Primoz Roglic and Julian Alaphilippe are the big favorites there.

Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert are missing;

the course does not fit into their program.
