On June 12, 2019, Chris Froome's career came to a sudden halt after a
very serious crash on the Dauphiné
.
Since then, including a team change, the four-time Tour de France winner, who will soon turn 36, has struggled to return to being something of what he was.
But his return to competition is proving difficult.
This Friday, after finishing
the Tour of the Alps
in the 93rd position in the general classification, the rider now in the Israel Start-Up Nation, headed to Switzerland to contest the Tour de Romandie as part of his preparation for the Tour.
But Froome, despite being part of a getaway "for the first time since 2018," admits not finding his way.
Even, sincerely, he questions his selection for the next Tokyo Olympics.
The British men's team has only four places for the Tokyo road race.
The
Yates
brothers
, Simon and Adam, and Hugh Carthy
, seem like the favorites.
Froome won bronze medals in the London and Rio Games time trials.
"In this condition, I can say that I would not deserve a place [in Tokyo]. But obviously
I
still
have hope that my form will improve
before the Tour de France and therefore before the Olympics," he confessed at the Gazzetta dello Sport.
Following the Tour de Romandie, a race he won twice (2013 and 2014), Froome will return to Tenerife for another concentration at height before embarking on his last pre-Tour race,
the Criterium Dauphine
.
"I feel like my recovery is slow, but I'm happy with how my legs are responding," he says.
After the long break to physically recover from the injury in 2019, Froome played
44 days of competition last year
and accumulates 20 in 2021 without optimal results.
