Trainer Dick Advocaat of Feyenoord sees the game against Vitesse on Sunday as a "crucial match" for the remainder of the season.

The Arnhemmers are in fourth place in the Eredivisie, with two points more than Feyenoord.

The team that finishes fourth will receive a ticket for the third heat of the new Conference League;

the number five has to enter the play-offs.

"The result of Sunday is very decisive for the remaining games", Lawyer said at his press conference in Rotterdam on Friday.

"In a defeat we are five points behind Vitesse and then it will be very difficult."

"We prefer not to play play-offs. But in the end it is about conquering a place in Europe, we hope to do that as soon as possible.

Lawyer acknowledged that Feyenoord has a "difficult season".

"With corona, injuries, whether or not to buy. The end is near, the boys know that they have to be fourth in order to be able to go on holiday a week earlier."

Just before the winter break in Arnhem, Feyenoord lost 1-0 to Vitesse.

The lawyer then adapted his team to the home club and let Feyenoord play football in a 5-3-2 system.

"I don't know if I will do that again, that depends on my feeling. And the feeling is mainly that we have to win this game."

Why the Conference League makes second place extra important

'Great for players that there are fans'

For the first time in months, spectators will be welcome in De Kuip on Sunday as part of the national pilots commissioned by the government.

"The number of 6,500 is of course very unfortunate, in such a large stadium," said Advocaat.

"But for the players it is great that there are some people again, that there is sound and reaction again."

With the exception of Bart Nieuwkoop who has been injured for some time, Advocaat has a fully fit selection.

At Vitesse, defenders Eli Dasa, Maximilian Wittek and Jacob Rasmussen are missing.

Vitesse coach Thomas Letsch told Friday that Wittek played the cup final against Ajax last Sunday (2-1 defeat) with a broken arm.

Feyenoord-Vitesse starts on Sunday at 4.45 pm and is led by referee Dennis Higler.
