According to the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), sports clubs in Germany lost one million members during the ongoing corona pandemic.

"Children and adolescents in particular are affected by this," said DOSB CEO Veronika Rücker on Wednesday at the "Sports, Medicine and Health Summit 2021" in Hamburg.

The congress for sports medicine and health will be held online in the Hanseatic city until Saturday.

Before the pandemic, the number of members in the roughly 90,000 German clubs was around 27 million, said Rücker, who also positively assessed the vaccinations offered by the Federal Ministry of Health for German starters at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The DOSB is “firmly convinced” that the increasingly good vaccination offer for the population justifies vaccination of the “representatives and ambassadors of Germany”.

Rücker emphasized that nobody was deprived of a vaccination option.

"We are on the right track, especially with the extremely vulnerable groups."

Aerosol researchers give the all-clear

Most recently, the Society for Aerosol Research (GAeF) announced that there was virtually no risk of corona infections, at least when doing contactless outdoor sports. "A virus does not yet make an infection," stated President Christof Asbach. "You need a few hundred to a few thousand for that." With all the optimism, Asbach also warned of risks: "We see the dangers in changing rooms, toilets or when approaching in the car or bus."

His colleague Gerhard Scheuch, former president of the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine, considers duels and normal team training to be problem-free in football.

"Small groups and training strictly based on distance make no sense," he said at "dfb.de".

He also considers the age limit for outdoor sports to be superfluous: "Age doesn't matter because there are almost no infections outdoors."

A study in Ireland confirmed the German aerosol researchers in their risk analysis.

According to a report by the Irish Times, only 260 of 232,000 cases of infection occurred outdoors.

"In other words: 99.9 percent of Covid-19 infections take place in closed rooms," summarized Scheuch.

There will probably not be any significant improvement after the planned passage of the Infection Act in the Bundestag on Wednesday: Only contactless individual sports alone, in pairs or with members of the household should be allowed. There are exceptions for professional and competitive athletes. And for children up to the age of 14, sport in groups should continue to be possible. With the planned exit restrictions from 10 p.m., jogging and walks should be allowed until midnight - but only on their own.
