Less than a month after joining the

Brooklyn Nets

, veteran center

LaMarcus Aldridge

suddenly announced his retirement Thursday after feeling an irregular heartbeat during his final game.

"I played my last game dealing with an irregular heartbeat. Later that night, my pace got even worse, which really worried me more," the 35-year-old explained in a message on his Twitter account.

Aldridge, a seven-time All-Star, played five games for the Brooklyn Nets, the last of them on April 10 against the Los Angeles Lakers, when he spent 23 minutes on the court and scored 12 points.

"Although I am better now,

what I felt with my heart that night was one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever experienced,

" he recalled.

"That said,

I have made the difficult decision to retire from the NBA

. For 15 seasons I have put basketball first and now is the time to put my health and my family first," he said.

The power forward, who averages 19.4 points and 8.2 rebounds in his career, left the San Antonio Spurs in March to join the Nets until the end of the season, where he aspired to help stars

James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving

to fight for the ring.
