Daniel Evans provided a big surprise on Thursday in the eighth finals of the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo.

The number 33 in the world gave Novak Djokovic his first defeat of the year.

Rafael Nadal reached the quarter-finals with ease.

Thirty-year-old Evans settled with Djokovic in more than two hours: 6-4 and 7-5.

It is only his fifth ATP victory on clay for the Briton and he is now for the first time in his career in the quarter-finals of a Masters tournament, the level below the Grand Slams.

Evans will play against David Goffin in the quarter-finals.

The Belgian also caused a surprise by eliminating fifth-placed Alexander Zverev: 6-4 and 7-6 (7).

Djokovic made a good impression on Wednesday in his first match since the Australian Open.

The number one in the world, who has recovered from a muscle tear in his stomach, recorded his tenth victory of 2021 (6-4 and 6-2) against top talent Jannik Sinner.

The 33-year-old Serb, in 2013 and 2015 tournament winner in Monte Carlo, had a lot more difficult on Thursday.

He struggled with the wind and lost twelve of the first seventeen points of the match against Evans.

Djokovic did come back to 4-4, but then returned his service for the third time.

That cost him the first set.

In the second company, the eighteen-time Grand Slam winner relinquished a 3-0 lead.

Evans finished it at 6-5 on his first match point and thus booked the biggest win of his career.

Congratulations from Novak Djokovic to Daniel Evans.
