After the match ball was wrapped in the sunshine in South Carolina, 38-ranked Kudermetova went to her husband and coach Sergej Demekhine, who took Vera Zvonareva to two Grand Slam finals in 2010, and got a long hug.

Dad is Eduard Kudermetov, 49, who has two KHL titles in the Russian hockey league.

- I really liked playing here, said the Russian, who did not lose a set in the tournament, in the speech of thanks held in a mouthguard at a microphone placed in the middle of the course which was of a simple cut with barely a few l stands.

When she then picked up the trophy, the speaker asked her to remove the mouthguard, so that the photographers would get better pictures, with the words:

- I'm probably fired for urging you to do so.

Got to test drive his new sports car

The same procedure was repeated when Kudermetova was shown to the sports car she won in addition to the victory check of SEK 585,000 (51.5 percent less than when the tournament was last organized in 2019).

The mouthguard came off when she tested her new car.

Although the final was played between two doldis on the tour, the starting field was high class.

Seven of the world's 17 highest ranked players lined up, including world setter Ash Barty who went out already in the quarterfinals.

91-ranked Danka Kovinic, who also chased her first WTA title, was tightly bandaged over her left thigh but offered stiff resistance.

There was only a single point difference between the players in the first set.

The 26-year-old appreciated that her mother was present and followed the tournament and when she then said a few words in Montenegrin, it broke and tears flowed.
