Trainer Paulo Fonseca of AS Roma has put his players on edge on Sunday for the quarter-final match with Ajax in the Europa League.

The Romans will defend a 2-1 lead against the team from Amsterdam on Thursday.

"Ajax is a very good team. It will be very difficult for us", he said after the league victory over Bologna (1-0).

"My players have to realize that nothing has been decided yet and that we need top performance to move forward."

Unlike Ajax coach Erik ten Hag, Fonseca gave many of his players a rest.

For example, Rick Karsdorp, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Jordan Veretout, Edin Dzeko and goalkeeper Pau López remained outside his basic formation.

"I thought it was important to give players a rest," said Fonseca.

"That was necessary after Thursday's tough game in Amsterdam."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan made his comeback in the second half after injuries.

"It is good to have him back against Ajax on Thursday," said Fonseca, who could not rely on the injured Leonardo Spinazzola, Chris Smalling and Stephan El Shaarawy against Bologna.

Ajax booked a 0-1 victory over RKC Waalwijk on Sunday and can therefore also work towards the match against Roma with a good general.

The game starts on Thursday at 9 p.m. in Stadio Olimpico.
