Lille did good business on Friday in the battle for the championship in the Ligue 1. The French leader, with Sven Botman in the starting line-up, won 0-2 on a visit to Metz.

In Germany, concerns for Schalke 04 were heightened by Arminia Bielefeld.

Burak Yılmaz, who scored three goals on behalf of Turkey against the Netherlands last month, was worth gold to Lille.

The striker was found by Renato Sanches after an hour of play and then shot the ball hard into the short corner: 0-1.

Zeki Çelik signed for the 0-2 in the final phase.

Lille escaped a deficit in the first half.

After hands from José Fonte, Metz received a penalty, but Aaron Leya saw his bet taken by Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

With the win, Lille now has a six-point lead over number two Paris Saint-Germain and seven points over number three AS Monaco.

Both of Lille's pursuers will come into action later this weekend.

Schalke deeper into trouble with victory in Bielefeld

In Germany, the relegation of Schalke 04 seems inevitable due to Arminia Bielefeld's victory over SC Freiburg.

The team of benches Michiel Vlap and Mike van der Hoorn won 1-0 at home, increasing the gap of the last player from Gelsenkirchen with the play-off spot to fifteen points.

Schalke has seven games left in the Bundesliga and could theoretically be relegated from the Bundesliga next week.

The 'Königsblauen' last dropped to the 2. Bundesliga in 1988.

Arminia Bielefeld owed the winning goal against Freiburg to Baptiste Santamaria.

The midfielder ran the ball into his own goal.

Not much later, Joakim Nilsson's 2-0 was rejected by the VAR due to offside.
