Coach Steffen Baumgart leaves the second division SC Paderborn in the summer.

The 49-year-old will not extend his expiring contract, the club announced on Thursday.

"The coach communicated this position to the club after intensive discussions over the past few weeks," it said.

"Sport Bild" and "Bild" had previously reported on it.

For weeks Paderborn had apparently tried to convince Baumgart to stay.

The club went to its financial pain limit.

For Baumgart, however, it was primarily not about financial aspects, but about the fact that he wants to strike a new path after his successful time in Paderborn.

According to the announcement, Baumgart emphasized that he had "an incredibly exciting and intense time" in Paderborn.

"In the past few weeks I have come to the conclusion that it is now time for a change."

The association respects the decision.

"Steffen Baumgart has set himself a sporting monument here in Paderborn and has played a key role in the success story of the club for many years," said SCP Managing Director Sport Fabian Wohlgemuth according to the announcement.

"It is now a matter of bringing the current season to a successful end together."

Baumgart, known for his emotional interviews, has been training East Westphalia since 2017, and they were promoted to the Bundesliga in the 2018/19 season.

From this, however, the SCP rose again directly in the past season.

Paderborn is currently eleventh after 27 match days and is nine points ahead of the relegation place.

It is still unclear where Baumgart will work in the future.

The ex-professional was recently traded as a candidate for first division clubs.

1. FC Köln and Schalke 04 are potential employers. However, the Revier-Klub signed Dimitrios Grammozis, 42, as a new coach at the beginning of March.
