The football players of Ajax conquered the Eredivisie Cup for the first time in club history on Sunday.

The team from Amsterdam won in the decisive fifth round 3-2 against defending champion FC Twente.

At first Ajax seemed to be heading for a remarkably simple afternoon.

The home club was already on a comfortable 2-0 lead after half an hour by goals from Nikita Tromp and Marjolijn van den Bighelaar.

FC Twente, however, showed resilience and reached the same level before half time thanks to hits from Fenna Kalma and Sisca Folkertsma.

Ajax still won in the second half by a quick goal from Van den Bighelaar again.

Since this season, the format of the Eredivisie Cup has been changed into a ladder competition of five single matches, in which clubs are allowed to challenge each other.

PSV was the leader in the Women's Eredivisie in the broken off last season and therefore started the cup tournament on the highest rung of the ladder.

The winning team of the four matches in each round of play is promoted or remains active at the highest level and the losing team is relegated or remains active at the lowest level.

The final is between the two teams that play at the highest level in the fifth round.

On Friday, all other games were played in the fifth round and then there were victories for PSV (5-1 against PEC Zwolle), ADO Den Haag (4-1 against Excelsior) and VV Alkmaar (3-4 against sc Heerenveen).
