Doctor accused of manslaughter of the Italian national team player

On Friday, prosecutors asked for a doctor to be sentenced to 18 months in prison for manslaughter in the case of the deaths of Fiorentina defender and Italian national team David Astori.

Astori died at the age of 31 in March 2018 after suffering a heart attack while in his hotel room before Fiorentina's Serie A match against Udinese.

The doctor allowed Astori to continue playing football in July 2017, seven months before his death.

The public prosecutor believed that the doctor, who was then the medical director of the Department of Sports Medicine at the Caregi University Hospital in Florence, had to conduct more in-depth examinations based on the results of the stress test.

But his lawyer, Siegfredo Fenius, said the doctor "acted in the right way".

Ansa and Agi have reported that a verdict is expected on May 3.

According to the autopsy report, Astori died of an irregular heartbeat, and an investigation was first opened against another doctor, before the case was dropped.

The funeral of Astori was attended by large crowds of fans and dozens of big footballers who came to bid farewell to the player who was captain of Fiorentina and the owner of 14 international matches in the Italian national team.
