Roberto Bautista

beat Russian

Daniil Medvedev

, first seed, in two sets in the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters 1000 on

Wednesday

.

Bautista, the seventh seed, edged Medvedev 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 32 minutes of play on the tournament's main court.

At 32 years old, the Spaniard will play his third semi-finals of a Masters 1000 against Italian

Jannik Sinner

(21st in the ranking), only 19 years old.

After the defeat of Medvedev, along with that of the German

Alexander Zverev

in its debut, the Miami semifinals will not feature a Masters 1000 winner.

This tournament is the first of its kind in which the three giants of men's tennis -

Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic

-

have not competed

since 2004.

Medvedev, who had just lost to Djokovic in the final of the last Australian Open, crashed again on Wednesday against Bautista, an opponent who had beaten him in their two previous matches, the last of them in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 in 2020.

The Spanish was relentless from the start, containing the powerful service of the Russian and throwing precise and forceful blows.

Bautista had already surpassed American John Isner in the second round, another of the best to serve on the circuit

Medvedev, who never settled into the match, paid for his frustration by smashing a racket to the ground before losing the first set 6-4.

In the second heat, the Russian continued to sport a hasty tennis and Bautista kept his concentration even when his rival got a break.

With a 5-2 lead, Bautista sealed the win with a scoreless game against a broken Medvedev.

The Spaniard has nine ATP titles to his name, none of them Grand Slam, and reached the final of a Masters 1000 in 2016 in Shanghai, losing to Britain's

Andy Murray
