For the first time in his career, Mikael Ymer had to step out on the track in the third round of a master tournament - but there was no further advancement for the 22-year-old in Miami.

95-ranked Ymer lost to the 83-ranked Finn Emil Ruusuvuori with the numbers 6-4, 1-6, 5-7 after just over two hours and 15 minutes of play.

It started promising for the Swede, who played at the top and took home the first set.

- I thought it was a good level in the first set.

I kept a good position on the court, says Mikael Ymer after the match.

Fought back

Then the 21-year-old Finn tagged on and played Ymer in the second set.

- He made it harder for me and held very well in the duels.

It ran a bit in the second set and I did not get some balls.

Then it goes fast.

Ruusuvuori kept the lead in the third set, but at the position 4-5, Ymer fought his way back into the match by taking home a breakpoint and went to race 5-5.

However, the Finn was too strong and immediately broke Ymer's serve.

The Swede had a chance for another breakpoint at 5-6, but the Finn saved the point and was able to take home the victory on his second match ball.

- I did what I could.

I may have been a little too passive at times, but it's easy to be hindsight.

Overall, it was a good tennis match anyway, Ymer states.

Good shape

He has shown good form this year.

In February, he reached the third round of the grand slam tournament Australian Open for the first time and thus became the first Swede to succeed with it since Robin Söderling in 2011.

- I must be happy that I have had very good results this year.

I have broken records in grand slam and masters, but I feel that there is a lot to work on, that I have a lot I can develop that I have not achieved.

That I do such good results gives me motivation to continue fighting, says Ymer.

The next competition for the 22-year-old will be the Monte Carlo Masters, which will be played April 11-18.

The Masters are the highest ranked tournament class on the ATP Tour, after the four Grand Slam tournaments.

- I look forward to the rest of the season.

It will be fun and interesting to see what happens.
