"Sports Netflix" obtains additional rights to broadcast Serie A matches
The "Dazon" sports streaming platform has won the rights to broadcast the majority of Serie A matches from 2021 to 2024, Serie A reported Friday.
Dazon's bid, estimated at 840 million euros a year, was chosen at the expense of the bid made by the historic carrier of the league matches, the Sky Network.
The 20 first-division clubs reached an agreement after two months of stalemate, only three days before the bids expired.
The League will continue its negotiations with "Sky" over the non-exclusive rights to transfer three matches in each of the 38 stages of the league.
The decision to choose "Dazon" represents a change in the trajectory of Italian football as it will be the first time that the majority of matches have been broadcast via streaming.
Dazon, the platform sometimes referred to as "Sports Netflix," has been broadcasting three games from each stage since 2018, for € 193 million a season.
Under the current agreement, which extends for three seasons between 2021 and 2024, "Dazon" won the exclusive rights to matches and to share broadcasting rights for three other matches in each of the 38 stages.
Sky, which currently pays 780 million euros per season, is negotiating to transfer three matches a week for 70 million euros.
