The Norwegian handball ladies, who won European Championship gold in December, got off to a disastrous start in the qualifiers for the Olympics in Tokyo.

Montenegro won 28-23 at home and now a fateful match awaits the Norwegians on Saturday against Romania.

- This was far from good enough.

The journey to the Olympics has become quite a bit tougher.

The road there can be long, says national team captain Thorir Hergeirsson to TV Norway, according to the Norwegian news agency NTB.

Due to the big loss, it is not even certain that it will be enough for Norway - which has won two Olympic golds and four more Olympic medals - to win against Romania to get a ticket to Tokyo.

On Sunday, Romania and Montenegro meet, and if everyone beats everyone in the group, the goal difference will determine which two teams will be ready for the Olympics from group 3.

In Group 1, Hungary won big against Kazakhstan with 46-19 and Russia beat Serbia with 29-24.
