The Dallas Mavericks confirmed Wednesday that their former player

Shawn Bradley

has been paralyzed after a bicycle accident suffered on June 20, when he was hit by a car in an area near his home in St. George (Utah).

The 48-year-old center has undergone surgery to try to replace his spinal cord injury, although from now on he will have to live tied to a wheelchair.

After eight weeks of rehab, doctors confirmed the bad news for Bradley, 229 centimeters tall.

"He always showed incredible determination and fighting spirit," said Mark Cuban, owner of the Mavericks, Bradley's team during his last eight NBA seasons (1997-2005).

During his first year with Brigham Young University, Bradley preached his faith for Australia, as he was a devoted follower of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons.

After fulfilling his mission, he was chosen as 'number two' in the 1993 'draft' by the Sixers.

Later he was also traded to the Nets.

Also, in 2001 he participated with the German team in the Eurobasket in Turkey.

Campaign for safety

According to the doctors, his deep religious convictions may help him in the therapy that awaits him ahead, which seems more arduous than his own preparation to become a professional player.

Accompanied by his wife Carrie and a group of specialists, Bradley wants to present his accident as an example to fight for the safety of cyclists.

In the next few months, he does not expect to issue any update notes on his status to pour himself out and delve into his spiritual struggle.
