Going the second round on nine fewer strokes than the first sounds like a real improvement - and Henrik Stenson also shone with an eagle on the ninth hole on the course in Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida, where The Players Championship is decided.

But the improvement came from the worst round of the PGA career, and Friday's 74 strokes, two over par, is not much to brag about for the Swede, who is overall one of the worst players in the competition and far from having to play further this weekend.

Henrik Norlander also went the round on 74 strokes and is on a total of ten over par, while Alex Norén could at least climb the results table after 70 strokes, but the bad starting round means that he is on a total of four over.

Even for them, it is finished.

Lee Westwood leads

Someone who can play on, however, is England's Lee Westwood, who with six birdies went the round on 66 strokes and takes the lead, on a total of -9.

Last week, he finished second behind Bryson DeChambeau at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

- I still have fresh memory in my mind last week, of playing well and hitting good shots when I needed to, but there is no hangover from last week.

It is a "feel good" feeling for me this week, and I have carried it with me in the first two rounds, says Westwood according to AFP.

He is being chased by compatriot Matthew Fitzpatrick, who is one stroke behind, and one stroke below are the American Chris Kirk and the Spaniard Sergio García.

The second round was blown off prematurely due to the darkness, and some players may finish it early on Saturday morning, local time.
