Muguruza wins the first title in "Dubai Tennis" for women

Spaniard Garbigny Muguruza, ranked ninth, won the Dubai Tennis Tournament by defeating Czech Barbora Krichikova 7-6 (8-6) and 6-3 on Saturday in the final match.

It is the first title for the world number 16 player since she won the Mexican Monterrey tournament in April 2019.

"It's a wonderful achievement. I've been coming here for several years in a row and I felt like I was close (to winning), but that wasn't enough. Today I managed to lift the winning trophy," said Muguruza, who became the first Spaniard to win the Dubai tournament.

"I am very happy after losing some consecutive final matches, to win these," she added.

Muguruza was eliminated in the semi-finals of Belgian Elise Mertens, and reached her third final since the beginning of this year.

After losing the Yara Classic final in early February to Australian local champion Ashley Parti, 27-year-old Mugorosa suffered the same fate last week in the Doha tournament final by losing to Czech Petra Kvitova, before winning the Dubai title.

It is the 14th final in the career of Roland Garros 2016 and 2017 Wimbledon champion.

Muguruza, who was a student at the hands of her famous compatriot Conchita Martinis, also raised the total number of her titles to eight.

On the other hand, Krechikova (25 years) reached the Dubai final by beating Swiss Gilles Tichmann in the semi-final, preventing her opponent from trying to win her third professional title.

It is the first-ever final match between Mugorosa and Krechikova, the runner-up for the 2017 Nuremberg tournament.
