They got together and took action - because they no longer wanted to see how their association bobbed around without a concept.
They went to Rangnick and actually aroused his interest, which they probably hadn't thought possible themselves.
They then brought this good news to the board of directors through an intermediary.
Now it is up to the supervisory board and its chairman Jens Buchta to forge a concept from this initiative that could finally give the association a perspective again.
Personal vanities shouldn't play a role in this.
On Friday, the Schalke control committee reacted with surprise.
In an official announcement, it pointed out that there had not yet been a “preliminary agreement” with Rangnick and emphasized that the selection process is in the hands of the supervisory board.
That's true.
But this also results in the obligation to bring about the best possible result - regardless of who took the initiative first.
FC Schalke 04, which had worked for many years to batter its image, could win back trust among fans, members, sponsors and potential investors with Rangnick.
The problems would of course not be solved even with Rangnick.
He cannot print money either.
But he could ensure that Schalke is viewed as a worthwhile investment again.
