The Alpine World Cup has come to Sweden and on Friday the competitions began with the women's slalom in a partly sunny and zero-degree Åre.

Current World Cup runner-up Petra Vlhova, Slovakia, was first out.

She delivered a stable ride and drove in at 49.72.

At that time, no one was beating.

This weekend's World Cup is a golden opportunity for Vlhova to take the lead in the overall World Cup as the current leader, Lara Gut-Behrami, is not involved.

- I was not so happy with my effort.

I had a bad feeling with the hill and the snow but afterwards I saw that it was not bad, says Petra Vlhova to SVT Sport.

The favorites held in the first run.

American star Mikaela Shiffrin was second, 41 hundredths behind Vlhova.

Katharina Liensberger, Austria, finished third with 57 percent.

"A real blow to the head"

They clearly had the advantage of their early start numbers.

The hill in Åre quickly became quite rutty in the warm weather and it was a bunch of skiers who drove out.

- It is soft and it is clearly an advantage to go out early, says Mikaela Shiffrin, who had start number five, to SVT Sport.

One of those who drove out was Swedish Emelie Wikström.

- It went so fast there.

I do not really know what I did if I crossed the skis or if I branched.

I got a little pain in my arm and got a pretty big blow to the head so I have a little pain in the jaw and head, says Wikström to SVT Sport.

"Must go better"

Seven Swedes were in the starting field in Åre.

The biggest Swedish jump, Sara Hector, had a heavy first ride.

She got a little hit in the skis early in the ride and drove in 2.30 after leading Vlhova.

She finished in 16th place.

- It went a little slow, I felt a little above.

It was very tracky.

But this does not depend on the surface, I have to ride better, says Hector to SVT after the first ride.

Elsa Fermbäck moved on as the last skier in 30th place.

None of the other Swedes (Sara Rask, Charlotta Säfvenberg, Moa Boström Müssener and Liv Ceder) moved on.

The second run starts at 16.15.
