German coach Joachim Löw will leave his post after next summer's European Championship, the German Football Association (DFB) reported.

Löw had a contract until 2022 but asked the German Football Federation (DFB) to terminate it after the tournament, which the entity accepted.

"I am taking this step with full awareness of what it means, full of pride and gratitude and also motivation for the Euro," the coach said in a statement quoted by the DFB website.

Löw took over as coach after the 2006 World Cup to relieve

Jürgen Klinsmann,

with whom he had worked as second coach since 2004. After reaching third place at the 2010 World Cup, Germany was crowned world champion in Brazil 2014.

The performance of Löw's Germany in the European Championship, finalist in 2008 and semi-finalist in 2012 and 2016, was also good but in Russia 2014 the Mannschaft was eliminated for the first time in its history in the group stage.

The World Cup failure brought criticism to Löw, who then attempted a renewal process, dispensing with players such as

Thomas Müller

,

Jerome Boateng

and

Mats Hummels

, to make way for the youngsters, which has not been well received either.

The win against Spain in the Nations League (6-0) was the lowest point in the renewal attempt and since then the pressure has grown for, at least, a return of Müller to the national team.

"I have great respect for Joggi Löw's decision," said DFB President Fritz Keller.

"The DFB knows what they have with him and that he is one of the great coaches in the world," he added.

The administrative director of national teams of the DFB, Oliver Bierhoff, recalled that he has worked with Löw for 16 years, that he has had good times with him and overcome difficult times and said that he regrets that now the roads are going to separate after the European Championship.
