Joachim Löw made the right decision.

The national coach will stop after the EM planned for the summer.

He's doing himself and his association a favor.

After the desolate World Cup in Russia in 2018, he had decided not to resign.

On the one hand understandable, with the worst performance at such a tournament in German football history, he did not want.

However, even then, many demanded his departure.

The 0: 6 against Spain at the end of last year confirmed many critics.

Löw did not comment for too long afterwards.

Now the 61-year-old has asked the management of the German Football Association (DFB) to terminate his contract, which is valid until the end of 2022, early, and the association agreed.

With this step, Löw shows greatness, he no longer clings to his office.

And gives the association time to find a successor in good time.

The World Cup in Qatar is scheduled for next winter.

The chances for Thomas Müller increase

His services to German football are enormous.

Löw has shaped an era: 15 years as national coach, so far three European Championship participations, three World Cup participations and the 2014 triumph in Rio.

He has developed as a coach, football under him has often thrilled the fans, he has become a world coach, but since 2018 - largely rightly - he has had to take a lot of criticism.

Löw's decision comes as a surprise from the point in time.

On closer inspection, however, his decision reveals many advantages in the current phase.

Löw has the chance to rehabilitate himself with a solid to very good EM for 2018.

And at the same time, the players know that there will be important changes in the national team in the long term.

Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels and Jérôme Boateng can hope for a return to the national team.

Löw only has this EM, he no longer has to think about how to deal with the old stars he has sorted out in the event of a nomination after the tournament.

Short-term success can and must be more important to him than the future.

Müller in particular should now have the best chances of going to the EM.

Everyone involved now has clarity.

That can only be beneficial.

A big challenge awaits the DFB: Finding the right successor for Löw.

It will be a landmark decision.

One candidate is Hans-Dieter Flick.

He knows the national team very well, was Löw's assistant for eight years and was instrumental in winning the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Flick would be the right one, the players really appreciate him.

At FC Bayern he won everything that can be won as a coach in just over a year, the Club World Cup was the sixth title in a year.

Löw is not a "Lame Duck"

Flick could be tempted to take on a new task.

It would be a bitter loss for Bayern.

Other candidates are likely to be Ralf Rangnick, U21 national coach Stefan Kuntz and Jürgen Klopp, who is experiencing a crisis with Liverpool FC.

The DFB bosses will now monitor developments in England even more closely.

Löw had recently worn himself out in the association, was angry because of indiscretions and internal power struggles.

It is to be hoped that the DFB will give him all the support he needs to prepare for the European Championship.

He is not a “Lame Duck”, his standing is still good despite the past two years.

This was also shown by the very respectful reactions from the Bundesliga after its decision was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Löw's decision could work like a liberation for him and the national team.

And let the coach and team get even closer together for this all-important European Championship.
