Lim Hyo-jun won both gold and bronze in the winter games at home in Pyeongchang 2018. But in 2019, he was accused of sexual harassment after pulling down another male athlete's pants in front of several teammates at the national team's training facility.

He was first convicted, but the verdict was upheld after the appeal.

The case is to be heard in the Supreme Court.

In August 2019, the South Korean Skating Federation suspended him for a year, but the sentence has been suspended during the trial.

If convicted, he will not be able to compete for the country in the Beijing Olympics in less than a year.

"As the legal process has dragged on, it has become harder and harder for Lim to represent South Korea and try to win its second straight Olympic gold in Beijing," his agency said in a statement.

The 24-year-old went to China last week after receiving his passport and is expected to join the Chinese team after being in a corona quarantine, according to the South Korean TV channel MBC.

According to the agency, Lim Hyo-jun has not been able to train with the South Korean team for two years.

"He just wanted to find ways to put on his skates again," they write.
