Lundbäck, who competed for Luleåklubben Bergnäsets AIK, took Olympic gold in 15 km in Sapporo in 1972 and World Cup gold in 50 km in Lahti in 1978, where he was also part of the winning Swedish relay team.

In addition, there were nine individual Swedish Championship golds between 1971 and 1980. It was also a win in the Vasaloppet 1981.

In SVT's Vasaloppet broadcast, Lundbäck was interviewed on a link by Jacob Hård and told about the tactics 40 years ago.

He had selected a couple of sucking slopes just before Oxberg after about 60 km of skiing, where there was 30 km left to the finish in Mora.

- We had chosen that hill and there I would make a real jerk.

I drove the maximum and got a lead of 30 seconds at Oxberg and led by four minutes at the last check (Eldris at 81 km), says Lundbäck.

How does it feel to have Lundbäcksbackarna named after you?

- It is absolutely fantastic and fun that it remains.

We have a sign that says Lundbäcksbackarna down there.

It's big and when I look at my career it's great to have become Olympic and world champion, but what I appreciate most is to have won the Vasaloppet.

Do you mean it?

- Absolutely, says a clearly moved Lundbäck who had 4.29.32 as victory time and then competed for IFK Råneå.
