The return will take place in the ATP tournament in Doha, Qatar, which begins on Monday, where Roger Federer will play his first match since the loss to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January 2020.

The 39-year-old underwent two knee surgeries last year, but says he always expected to return.

There was no question of quitting.

- I realize that it is unusual for a 40-year-old to make a comeback after missing a whole year.

But the important thing is that I am injury-free and have no pain anywhere, says Federer.

- I am very happy to be back and play a tournament.

I did not think it would take that long.

Federer does not have high hopes for himself, but hopes to be able to surprise.

And he is already looking forward to upcoming tournaments and the big goals during the year.

- I will see if I can play in Dubai, the week after Doha, and then we will see how it will be with the gravel season, he says and adds that he hopes to be back to "100 percent" just in time for Wimbledon in June.

Only then will he decide whether to play in the Olympics this summer.
